What is Virtual Private Server
(VPS) Hosting?
If you
have a Website on the Internet, it
will be hosted on a server and made
available to your online visitors by
your hosting provider. In the web
hosting business there are currently 3
main types of hosting available;
1.
Shared
Hosting, 2. VPS
Hosting and 3.
Dedicated
Hosting. VPS stands for
(Virtual Private Server) and is
similar to shared hosting but as the
name suggests, with a VPS you
virtually have your own private
server, a portion of the server that
is yours alone and with much more
resources available to you.
If your
website is fairly small and receives
just a few hundred visitors per month
then
Shared
Hosting will probably cater
for all your needs, you will share the
servers memory (RAM), Disk Space, and
CPU (Processor), but if your website
is large and receives a high number of
visitors you should consider upgrading
to a VPS hosting package which are
becoming very popular right
now.
With
VPS hosting, you will be
allocated your own dedicated Memory
(RAM), disk space, and share sometimes
several very poweful Processors. This
will enable your site to receive many
thousands of visitors per month and
you should not see any degradation in
your service. You will also get route access
to your VPS for greater control and no other users will
be able to effect the smaoth running of your server
and website.
Managing
your VPS
If like
me you are used to being mollycoddled
and looked after by your Web Hosting
Company, I would opt for a Fully
Managed VPS. This way, should anything
happen to the server hardware or
software your web host support team
will be on hand to take care of any
problems for you. Unmanaged and
Semi-Managed options are also
available if you enjoy getting to
grips with server hardware and
software problems.
Summery.
In
summing up I would say that VPS
hosting is a flexible, scalable, and
economical hosting solution that can
fit the needs of almost any kind of
website. It’s a perfect solution for
those who have outgrown their shared
hosting plan but don’t really need or
want to move to much more expensive
dedicated server hosting. If you have
a large number of files, run multiple
websites, and receive a major flow of
traffic, then you might consider going
for VPS hosting. It’s a powerful
package that allows you to do much
more than you can with a shared
hosting plan, but requires less
investment than a dedicated
server. VPS Hosting costs between 50 and
250 Dollars per month depending on the amount of Webspace,
Bandwidth and features you require.
